Cops in North Miami Beach see nothing wrong with using Black men’s mugshots as targets at the shooting range

Police in North Miami, Florida are facing a backlash of outrage after it was discovered that the sniper team had been using pictures of Black men for target practice at the Medley Firearms Training Center last month.

One of the pictures was that of the brother of a National Guard sergeant, who discovered the bullet riddled images at the shooting range.

North Miami Beach Police Officer J. Scott Dennis came to the defense of the snipers, stating that no racial profiling was involved, no policies were violated, and none of the officers who used the images as target practice will be disciplined. Dennis gave a statement to the local NBC station WTVJ-TV, saying that the mugshots were “vital for facial recognition drills” and they would continue to be used after the department expands its inventory of images, which also includes white and Latino faces.

According to WTVJ-TV, several local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies in the area disputed Dennis, insisting that they all use commercial targets.
