The Apollo Theater announced that D’Angelo and The Vanguard will grace its legendary stage for an epic one-night-only concert on Saturday, February 7th at 8pm.
Just last month, D’Angelo surprised the world with the release of his first studio album in 14 years – Black Messiah. This special evening is the singer’s only U.S. engagement since the album’s release and is scheduled just in advance of his recently announced The Second Coming European tour. This concert will mark D’Angelo’s first time headlining the iconic Apollo.
In 1991, at the age of 16, D’Angelo competed in the Theater’s long running competition show, Amateur Night at the Apollo, under the group name Michael Archer and Precise. The singer and his group went on to win three consecutive nights and a cash prize. Using his Amateur Night winnings, D’Angelo purchased recording equipment and began writing the songs that would eventually end up on his 1995 classic debut album, Brown Sugar. He later returned to the Apollo as a guest artist on the popular television show Showtime at the Apollo.
