Hosted in The Drawing Room at The New York Palace, fashion-lovers and happily-ever-after-seekers alike indulged in the fantastical world of today’s Cinderella.

JCPenney hosted an exclusive fairytale event to celebrate its collaboration with Disney’s “Cinderella.” Scattered with violinists, designers, and a 4-foot glass slipper, guests were  transported into a realm of reverie. The height of modern interpretation was demonstrated most vividly through the artistry of design students of Kent State University.  Designing under the pressures of a panel of fashion experts (including Project Runway judge Nina Garcia, Katie Holmes and Charlotte Ronson), press, and time, these aspiring designers were asked to create completely original interpretations of an in vogue Cinderella.

Kellie Matthews, a junior design student at Kent State gave first-hand insight into her design and New York Fashion Week.

Q: Is there any designer or show in particular that you are looking forward to this week?

A: Well I’m actually helping out and dressing for Eden and I love them, so I’m really excited for that show.

Q: How important are events like this to your development as a designer and artist?

A: I think it really important because you don’t really get this kind of experience everyday.  This is something completely different and it’s just an amazing experience that I would probably never have again.  You get really great connections, like Nina Garcia is right there – that’s amazing!  I think just being able to design under pressure, also, is really important in the industry because there’s always pressure, that’s just what it is.

With whimsy, imagination, and creativity JCPenney sets a completely new standard of what it means to be a contemporary princess in the 21st century.  This modern day celebration of Cinderella, her story, and her wardrobe marks a truly thrilling kick off to the Spring 2015 New York Fashion Week.  Disney’s “Cinderella”  hits theaters on March 13.
