David Simon is not too happy about the situation in Baltimore.
Following the death of 25-year-old unarmed Black man Freddie Gray, the people of Baltimore, MD took to the streets, some in protest, others in riots. Simon, a former Baltimore sun reporter who grew up in the area, feels that the more aggressive protestors aren’t doing themselves any favors.
“There was real power and potential in the peaceful protests that spoke in Mr. Gray’s name initially, and there was real unity at his homegoing today,” Simon wrote. “But this, now, in the streets, is an affront to that man’s memory and a dimunition [sic] of the absolute moral lesson that underlies his unnecessary death.”
The officers involved in his death have been charged with murder and homicide, among other things, and the rioting has since calmed down, but nationwide protests and unrest are still high.
