Popular clothing company American Apparel has sparked controversy again with another advertisement. The photo features topless model, Mak, who poses as the words “made in Bangladesh” are written across her chest.
Mak is a merchanidsiser for the company and was born in Bagladesh to a traditional Muslim family. She moved to the U.S at age 4 and says she, “(forged) her own identity,” essentially leaving behind many traditional Muslim belief, according to a statement from American Apparel to Elle.com.
The company added, “She has found some elements of Southern California culture to be immediately appealing, but is striving to explore what lies beyond the city’s superficial pleasures. She doesn’t feel the need to identify herself as an American or a Bengali and is not content to fit her life into anyone else’s conventional narrative.”
The company has been a topic of controversy in the past for their racy ad campaigns. For the uncensored image and more information, head over to ELLE.
