If you missed last week’s episode of Being Mary Jane you missed an hour of nothing but complete and utter surprises. This week’s two-part season finale, on the other hand, was a nail bitter.
Mary Jane surprises Niecy and the baby with what Niecy calls “guilt gifts.” In turn, Mary Jane apologizes to Niecy for not acknowledging the baby as a blessing. As the two sit and talk, Mary Jane is shocked to hear niece’s confessions about how she really feels about herself, revealing her self-esteem issues. “Baby you’re so beautiful, I wish you could see,” Mary Jane assures Niecy.
The next day before taking Helen to her doctor’s appointment, Patrick surprises her with a life alert necklace, with good intention of course. Mary Jane and PJ are tickled by the gesture while their mother storms out the house. She wanted no parts of the necklace she deemed for “old people.”
On her way to work, MJ is swarmed and questioned by a reporter and his crew. Kara comes to the rescue telling MJ the news of her friend Terrence Mitchell’s suicide. After watching a clip of the heated interview with Mitchell’s ex, Rayna Hilson, SNC decides it’s best if Mary Jane makes no statement to the press.
MJ is very angry when Kara tells her that ‘Talk Back’ is being pulled off the air temporarily. Mary Jane returns to her parent’s home to catch the news of a reporter bashing her for tarnishing Mitchell’s reputation; as if her day couldn’t get any worse. A talk with her father soothes her conscience. While MJ and her dad talk, upstairs PJ and Helen spend some time together before PJ leaves for class.
He offers his mother a remedy for her Lupus; marijuana. She is 100% opposed to it at first but eventually comes around once he explains the benefits. She stands strong on not inhaling the drug but PJ then makes other suggestions. She is stern on keeping the rather hilarious secret between the two and insists on not wanting to get fat.
Mary Jane is delivered a handwritten note by Terrence:‘Please don’t let my mistakes cloud the issue. We need you. Terrence. PS – I could never stay mad at you, MJ.’ It isn’t until she reaches home that Terrence’s death hits her. In the midst of her sadness, she receives a call from Patrick about Niecy having her baby.
On the way to the hospital Patrick and PJ confront Dante and tell his mother about Niecy and the baby. His mother makes him go to the hospital to support Niecy’s birth. They welcome an adorable little girl, Isabel.
‘Talk Back; returns with an interview on a filmmaker. On air Mary Jane apologizes to her late friend and touches on the issue of prison injustices as Terrence pushed for when he was alive. Although SNC isn’t at all pleased with her performance, MJ needed to get it off her chest. The show comes to an end with an unexpected visit from David. He asks MJ something she’d never think she’d ever hear out of his mouth “Did you steal my sperm?”
