Now over a decade after his classic underground album was distributed, Benefit has resurfaced and has began releasing new material
By Tamara El

Before recording software was widely accessible, and without access to a beat machine, the artist from Massachusetts developed an unorthodox production method using primitive wave editors to make his music. It wasn’t until he was fourteen years old that he began to write down his ideas and life experiences in the form of lyrics and he began to put together his way of expressing himself within the culture that he valued so highly. Hip hop consumed him, and he wasn’t content with only taking part in the verbal aspects of it. The technological revolution of the early nineties had made it feasible for him to do his work. He came to this realization and began to teach himself how to make beats using a linear wave editor on a PC. He recorded using a skinny white computer mic and like a $12.00 sound card. What’s even more cool is that he produced, wrote, recorded, and mixed songs throughout the tail end of hip hop culture’s Golden Era using these methods, which is the same time he started making music. After a number of leaks, the original diy underground legend Benefit dropped his latest album, “Excutioner of Time” via Fork and Spoon Distribution. The 15 track album boasts a slew of high profile artist features including Mobb Deep, Fred the Godson, Red Cafe, Joe Budden, Freeway, Sheek Louch, Hell Rell, Famoso, and many more.
