Producer and rapper, Big Baby Gandhi has been a fixture in the New York’s underground hip hop scene for sometime; frequently collaborating with Das Racist, Steel Tipped Dove, and many progressive acts that challenge the typical sounds associated with the city. While he made a name for himself as a featured artist, in 2012 he broke out of the shadows with his debut project, NO1 2 LOOK UP 2, which featured intricate, personal rhymes and unique production. Since that time, he has continued to steadily build his fanbase, yet acknowledge his displeasure with the industry in general. Earlier this year, he announced that 2013 would be his last year as a rapper; choosing to focus on other ventures outside of hip hop.
Before his exit though, he was gracious enough leave fans with some new music to remember him by. On December 6th, he plans to drop his first full length album, entitled Debut. To mark this moment, he premiered a brand new video for the first single off the album, ”Boomerang”, which is reminiscent of the good ole era of boom bap. It still contains anxious introspection, but this time it is paired with a lo-fi sound that is oddly appealing. The accompanying video follows this same creative choice, seemingly filmed on a vhs camera. It is an interesting concept and aesthetic, one that fully realizes his creative potential that will surely be missed in the future.
