De Blasio has been elected as the next Mayor of New York City.

The Democrat candidate defeated Republican candidate Joe Lhota by a landslide, gaining the trust of New Yorkers who feverishly itched for a new direction for the city. De Blasio’s victory makes him the first Democrat to hold said position in 20 years.

De Blasio stood behind economic equality, particularly higher taxes for the rich and better relations between law enforcement and civilians, including the controversial stop and frisk tactics of the NYPD.

Bill De Blasio is married to Chirlane McCray, an African-American woman and is the father to a daughter and son. His son, who sports an afro was a common motif throughout his campaign, speaking out against stop and frisk.

De Blasio will take office January 1 as New Yorkers say goodbye to current Mayor Michael Bloomberg.
