Sam Smith has been blowing up this year. Fresh off of an SNL appearance and Coachella set with Disclosure, the 21-year-old is ready to crossover from electronic music to taking over Top 40 in North America. Last night, he hit Mod Club in Toronto, ON and performed a selection from his The Lonely Hour LP including hits “Told You Now” “Lay Me Down” and “Stay With Me” for the last stop on his club tour.
While his vocal talent is undeniable, the introvert singer was at times timid and still clearly trying to find a balance between performing effectively and engaging the crowd at the same time. And what a crowd it was, swarming with shrieking fans that could not get enough of the young star as girls flashed their phone cameras all night participating in his feel-good come up story.
The most significant thing to note that is that despite just getting started Sam Smith’s abilities are honed and exact. At no point in the night did he quiver or even show any sign of miscuing. His charming albeit boyish looks are a boon as is his obvious affinity for R&B giving him the perfect skill-set to succeed as a captivating mainstream star.
