Family and friends mourn the loss of 14-year-old teen killed by train
Family and friends are mourning the passing of a California teenager hit and killed by an Eastbound freight train. According to authorities, 14-year-old Martinez resident Jenna Betti was struck and killed by the active train passing through the city on Sunday evening.
Investigators say Betti was stuck by the train after she ran back onto the train tracks to pick up her cell phone that she had dropped.
“This is a popular thoroughfare there. Locals have told us that it’s not uncommon to see people jump across and run back and forth,” said ABC Local’s Nick Smith. “They believe that Jenna may have misjudged the distance of that train when she was struck and killed,” he added.
Smith also reported that family and friends had continuously returned to the scene where Betti was killed to pay their respects and leave flowers in the color of pink, Betti’s favorite color.
Grief counselors were called in at Martinez Junior High School, the school Betti attended, to comfort students in an effort to help them deal with the loss of one of their peers.
The incident is currently under investigation by the freight railroad company.
