After only being the mayor of Charlotte, N.C. for only six months Patrick Cannon has put in his letter of resignation earlier today fearing his pending charges will be too much of an distraction for the rest of North Carolina and their businesses. Cannon was arrested hours before his resignation, accused of taking over $48,000 in bribes from undercover FBI agents . According to a criminal complaint from the U.S. Attorney’s office Cannon also accepted airline tickets, and a hotel room as bribes and solicited more than $1 million. Cannon was paid cash by the undercover agents who were pretending to be real estate developers in exchange for access to those responsible for planning, zoning and permitting. If Cannon is convicted he faces up to 50 years in prison and more than $1 million in fines.
