Here’s something you don’t see everyday — a thief with a conscience.

A nonprofit director got the surprise of a lifetime, when the thieves who broke into her offices came back to return the items they took, along with a letter apologizing for their actions.

According to authorities, the burglars broke into San Bernardino County Sexual Assault Services on July 31 around 10 p.m., and walked away with computer towers, monitors and a lap top. The thieves entered through the ceiling, which set off alarms that alerted the police. The nonprofit’s director Candy Stallings was immediately called to the scene.

After the report was filed, Stallings returned home, only to be alerted by the police the following six hours later around 4:30 a.m., that suspicious activity was taking place at her offices. When Stallings arrived the second time, she couldn’t believe what she found.

“All my stuff was in front of the door,” Stallings said. “There was a shopping cart, and there were the PCs that were taken, there was the laptop – everything was there.”

When investigators opened to laptop to begin dusting for prints, they discovered a note tucked inside:

“We had no idea what we were takeing. Here your stuff back we hope that you guys can continue to make a difference in peoples live. God bless,”

Everybody makes mistakes. We’re glad the thieves could draw the line at nonprofit organizations. Maybe there’s hope for society after all.
