Bold comment
Alabama Democratic state representative, Alvin Holmes, made a rather bold comment yesterday that has many of his peers and co-lawmakers up in arms.
Holmes made the shocking comment while responding to fellow state rep Mary Sue, who was engaging in a back and forth with Holmes as they debated passing a bill that would ban all abortions following the detection of a fetus’ heartbeat. This was Holmes’ comment:
Ninety-nine percent of the all of the white people in here are going to raise their hand that they are against abortion. On the other hand, 99 percent of the whites that are sitting in here now, if their daughter got pregnant by a black man, they are going to make their daughter have an abortion. They aren’t let her have the baby. Listen, you know the truth sometimes hurts, All this stuff about abortion and this and that — that’s just a con game. That’s for whites, it ain’t for blacks.
I can imagine the air was completely sucked out of that room, but Holmes and Sue weren’t done with their back and forth. Holmes eventually asked Sue what she would do if her daughter was impregnated by a black man, to which she deftly replied “I would let it [the baby] run around my living room and love it as my grandchild.
