“The Captain,” is ready to hang it up after the 2014 season.

Derek Jeter, Yankees, Retirement, Bronx, New YorkDerek Jeter announced on Facebook that the 2014 season will be his last.

“I could not be more sure. I know it in my heart. The 2014 season will be my last year playing professional baseball.” the Yankees captain said via the Facebook post.

Yankees fan or not, Jeter is one of the best and classiest players in MLB history. Jeter is a certified Hall of Famer with 3,312 career hits with a .312 batting average and 256 career home runs. He also ranks first in Yankees history in games played, at-bats, hits and stolen bases over his 19 season career with the Bronx Bombers.

Jeter helped the Yankees win five World Series Championships and has been the leader of the club throughout his years with the team. Going into the final year of the four year, $60 million contract he signed before the 2011 season, and coming off of a 2013 season filled with injuries, the Yankees shortstop knows that this should be his last season as a pro.

“I will remember it all: the cheers, the boos, every win, every loss, all the plane trips, the bus rides, the clubhouses, the walks through the tunnel and every drive to and from the Bronx,” Jeter says in the Facebook post. “I have achieved almost every personal and professional goal I have set. I have gotten the very most out of my life playing baseball, and I have absolutely no regrets.”

Jeter’s final home game is scheduled for September 25 vs Orioles. His final regular season game? Fittingly, Jeter’s final regular season series will begin on September 28th at Fenway Park. Since the announcement, ticket prices have skyrocketed across the internet for both series.

The 13-time All-Star will be remembered as one of the greatest Yankees to ever don the pinstripes. We hope the final season of the 39 year-old shortstop’s career will be a special one, and it’s hard to believe that this will be Jeter’s final year as a Yankee. You will be missed Derek Jeter!
