Kwame Kilpatrick, former Detroit Mayor,  was sentenced to 28 years in Federal prison on Thursday, October 10, 2013. Kilpatrick was convicted in March of over two dozen charges of corruption, including extortion and racketeering. His punishment is said to be one of the strictest in similar corruption cases.

Kilpatrick’s lawyers argue that while he did commit these crimes, he still had great achievements as mayor that shouldn’t be overlooked. Furthermore, he is unjustly being used as the face of the city’s major battle with leaders and corruption. They have two weeks to appeal in court.
