Esperanza Spalding stars in a new video protesting the cruel treatment of prisoners that Guantánamo Bay is notorious for. For “We Are America,” Spalding recruited names like Harry Belafonte, Stevie Wonder, and Janelle Monae. On behalf of the 164 prisoners currently being detained at Guantánamo, the video demands human rights for all detainees.
“I don’t have any prison experience but it’s really hard to fathom being imprisoned in a place against your will and not to be charged with anything, not to have the ability to defend yourself,” Spalding said in a recent Wall Street Journal interview.
Be sure to catch “We Are America.” If you’re so inclined, take it even further with an easy phone call to the U.S. Capitol Switchboard. Dial 1-202-224-3121, connect to your U.S. Senators and Congressional Representative, and tell them the following: “I am your constituent and I want you to support closing Guantánamo. Indefinite detention and unfair trials are illegal, un-American, and unnecessary.”
