When Missouri DE Michael Sam came out as gay, there was a wave of support, including from the First Lady, Michelle Obama. Though, Sam claimed his family was supportive, it was revealed that his father wasn’t okay with the news.
Michael Sam, Sr. was dining at the local Denny’s when he received a text on his birthday from his namesake that read: ”Dad, I’m gay.” Startled by the news, the older Sam exited the restaurant.
“I couldn’t eat no more, so I went to Applebee’s to have drinks,” Sam Sr. told the New York Times. “I don’t want my grandkids raised in that kind of environment.”
The self described “old school” dad wasn’t fond of the idea of a gay player in the NFL, even though it could be his son.
However, Michael Sam, Sr. is singing a different tune today. Though shocked by the news, he stated in an interview with NBC that ”no matter what, he’s my son and I still love him.” He doesn’t doubt he can make a NFL team because from a young age, the younger Michael ”wanted to make something of himself.”
Sam is looking to become the first active known gay player in the NFL.
