Brand Nubian, Treach, Nice & Smooth head up Philly’s throwback show

This weekend in the “City of Brotherly Love”, it was all love at the Trocadero Theater when true school icons Mr. Cheeks of The Lost Boyz, Treach of Naughty By Nature, Brand Nubian, and Nice & Smooth performed their decades deep classics. The club was packed to capacity, yet the vibe was all positive in anticipation of the artists that were set to hit the stage.

Hosted by Philly radio personality Lady B and the legendary DJ Teddy Ted of the Awesome Two on the wheels, the night was definitely a throwback to Hip Hop’s Golden Era. Mr. Cheeks broke the cherry for the night, offering up a couple of his smash singles like “Renee” and “Lights, Camera, Action!” Next, Greg Nice and Smooth Bee wowed the crowd with some of their classics like “Hip Hop Junkies”, “Dwyck”, “Funky For You”, and the crowd favorite, “Sometimes I Rhyme Slow”.

Naughty leader Treach brought New Jersey with him, with a large portion of the crowd being from the other side of the Ben Franklin Bridge and the energy was unparalleled. After spitting his verse from the epic “Uptown Anthem”, Treach gave a soldier’s salute to his partner in crime and Hip Hop legend Tupac Shakur.

Last but not least was Lord Jamar and Sadat X, who after performing a couple of tracks from their “In God We Trust” album, brought out the frontman of the legendary Brand Nubian crew, Grand Puba Maxwell. With hits like “Slow Down”, “All For One”, and Puba’s “What’s The 411?”, it was no longer a discussion why the crew from Now Rule headlined this show.
