Google’s USB dongle looks to bring internet video to our TV screens, and could pose a threat to the cable companies, satellite cable and even digital tv.
At an affordable price of $35 for the dongle and $24 worth of Netflix, Google is looking to take away current subscribers from their cable companies and their internet based TV. If your a current Netflix customer this could be a win for you as Google is looking to deliver news and entertainment on demand at a basement prices.
How does the dongle actually work? It mirrors content being played on a laptop, tablet and even a smartphone and sends the image to your television in which your Chromecast is setup. Its not beamed but streamed from a cloud direct server to the dongle when the mirroring option is activated to services like Netflix and Youtube.
The device runs on ”a simplified version of Chrome OS” and will require users to use a separate USB power charge to keep it up and running. It also requires users to connect the device to your local wifi network for usage and to access the cloud server. While its available on Google’s Play store, it will also hit retail store Best Buy this weekend (July 28). According to the Playstore the device will ship in 4 to 5 weeks so looking to buy the device at Best Buy might be a better option.
