One of New Yorks City’s last remaining graffiti landmarks will be torn down to start building new apartment complexes and art studios for the Long Island City community. Home to the legends, 5pointz have been a live canvas to many well known graffiti artist from all over the world. Legendary writers from Canada, Switzerland, the Netherlands, Japan, Brazil, and all over the United States have painted on the building walls, including Stay High 149, Tracy 168, Cope2, Part, and Tats Cru.

5Pointz factory represents the five boroughs coming together as one bringing together the the graffiti scene. It’s been talks that David Wolkoff, owner of the build wanted to plan something bigger for Long Island City. But the community voted against it to keep 5pointz standing for a little while longer. New renovations to the property are setting to start after the summer.

We’re building a new building,” Wolkoff said. “We want to try to transition from the past into the future. Long Island City is growing and becoming very popular.”
It’s sad to see over 350 murals demolished at 5Pointz Aerosol Art Center. However, we can expect 1,000 new places for residents and maybe a stronger art scene to merge from the new studios being built in the area.
