On this date in 1965, Jeffrey Allen Townes aka DJ Jazzy Jeff was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Townes is best known for his extraordinary DJ skills as well as being the hilarious sidekick and business partner of rapper/actor Will Smith aka The Fresh Prince. As the trailblazing duo DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince, the boys from West Philly brought home the very first Grammy Award given to Hip Hop artists for their debut album, He’s The DJ, I’m The Rapper. He’s also known for popularizing the “transformer” scratch sound performed by DJs as far back as the 1980s.

As Will Smith began to branch off into other mediums of entertainment, Jeff established a name for himself in the biz, launching the careers of artists such as neo-soul greats Musiq Soulchild and Jill Scott through his A Touch Of Jazz production company.
