Fifth Harmony kicked off the show by stepping out of dollhouses in their edgy outfits. Little Mix followed suit with tunes from their new album “Salute.” It was fun to watch them perform with their amazing male back up dancers.
Collins Key then enchanted the audience with magic tricks. He performed with audience participation. His most spectacular trick, which had the audience on the edge, was when he opened a locked box that had been hanging from the ceiling and extracted a piece of paper with handwritten tweets which the audience had just tweeted moments before. He also performed spectacular card tricks. On example was when he and a fan both signed a card, placed the signed versions in their mouths and then he was able to switch them somehow!
Lovato then took the stage in an avant-garde marching jacket, edgy leggings and combat boots, and opened with one of her most popular songs of all time, “Heart Attack.” While she sang, new clips mixed with the already popular music video played on the big screens. Smoke machines announced her dramatic entrance. She then proceeded to perform more of her hits such as “Made in the USA,” “Nightingale,” “Unbroken, “and “Don’t Forget,” as the bright neon lights of every color went berserk on stage, spinning in all different directions and illuminating the dark coliseum.
Demi then kept the crowd pumped with “Really Don’t Care,” the eighth song from her self-titled album, “Demi.” Of course the show would not have been complete without the track after which her tour was named – “Neon Lights.” High energy and neon flashing lights accompanied the stage. Earlier in the show, before Lovato came on, the crowd was encouraged to download The Demi Lovato App on their mobile devices, and as she performed this song, she encouraged the fans to open the app and start tapping. Doing so allowed everyone’s mobile screens to flash different colors. The crowd collectively held up their phones flashing a multitude of colors, adding to the ambiance of the coliseum as well as contributing more lights to the already red, yellow and orange lit stage. Following, she performed another single “Fire Starter,” which also ended with a dramatic flourish as Lovato performed a drum solo to finish the upbeat song.
One of the more touching and serious moments during the very fun concert, was when Lovato decided to speak to her fans about her personal struggles. She briefly discussed her personal history with self-harm and warned those in the audience – children and parents alike, to seek help for their loved ones. Lovato followed her story with “Warrior,” while playing chords on the piano as the audience held up signs of support. She also shared the story of her receiving news of her father’s passing, while performing at Nassau Coliseum last year and dedicated her next song “For the Love of a Daughter” to him. The song and story moved the audience to tears as they held up signs and posters of encouragement.
To end the more solemn portion of the show, she then performed “Let it Go,” from the animated movie “Frozen” as the crowd went wild. After, she changed into a beautiful black maxi dress with slits that showed off her shoulders, she stepped onto a stage elevator and performed”Skyscraper” as the smoke machines worked to give the illusion of Lovato floating on clouds. She then closed the show with another one of her most popular songs, “Give Your Heart A Break” and exited the show in the stage elevator as the smoke machines worked to show only her silhouette lowering into the stage.
We had an amazing time at Demi’s show. Her powerful vocals were stellar and she is a must-see live. You can check out Demi on tour at one of the dates below:
