This edition of HH101 focuses on the importance of rest and the impact on our mental and physical health

Sleep is an important part of our health that many of us neglect. We commonly will sacrifice sleep in order to meet our goals or achieve the task at hand. The thing that is crazy about this type of thinking is that many of us have been taught that it’s good. I am sure that at some point we have heard others brag or probably have bragged ourselves about how little sleep we’ve gotten in order to achieve something. Even though your relationship with sleep may seem superficial, I will say that it requires more respect.

Issues Due To Sleep Deprivation:
Obesity
High Blood Pressure
Decreased productivity
Increased negative moods or behaviors
Decreased academic performances
Diabetes

Natural Sleep Aids:
Melatonin
Valerian Root
Chamomile
Kava
Lavender
Magnesium
Unplug from all electronics at least 30 min prior to bedtime.
Exercise
Develop a sleep routine

Recommended Hours Of Sleep:
Keep in mind that age and pregnancy affect the number of hours needed for sleep
Toddlers: 9-10 hours of sleep and 2 to 3 hours of naps
School Age Children: 10 hours of sleep
Teens: 9-10 hours of sleep
Adults: 7-8 hours of sleep

The issue of sleeplessness within our country is so great that the CDC declared insufficient sleep an epidemic. We have to reevaluate the value that we put on sleep as it relates to our health. There will be times when you will have to stay up late, the goal however is not to allow it to become a habit. Keep in mind how important it is for your body to have the ability and the time to reset. Don’t forget to follow me on Instagram @MelanatedBeauty.
