Janelle Monáe and Kimbra take over Australia and New Zealand next month.

What happens when two of music’s most quirkiest female soul/pop artists vibe together after a performance?

Hopefully, for our sake, a tour is born.

Janelle Monáe annouced that she will be touring with New Zealand recording artist, Kimbra next month. The Golden Electric Tour, which starts May 16th in Perth will tour five cities in Australia and New Zealand. The artists will have both joint and seperate performances. Fans can anticipate joint performances from Monáe and Kimbra to include remixes of Aretha Franklin’s “Rock Steady” and Michael Jackson’s “Wanna Be Startin’ Somethin.”

LiveNation, who will be organizing the  Golden Electric Tour released a statement revealing the inspiration behind the tour, conceived last summer after both artists performed at the Montreux Jazz Festival.

That evening the two artists were in the same Swiss hotel bar with their respective bands. Conversations sparked, bonding over a shared love of Prince, and as the night wore on the collective began jamming in the bar.

The impromptu session cemented their mutual respect for each other’s artistry: it was the budding of a deep friendship. The ties between Janelle and Kimbra grew stronger, in tandem with an artistic curiosity and an exploration of different musical languages, and the idea of the tour collaboration was born.”

Kimbra, who collaborated with  Gotye for his  2012 multi-platinum single ” Somebody That I Used To Know”  is expected to release her sophmore album this year. Her debut album “Vows” charted at No. 14 on the The Billboard 200.

With Kimbra’s electropop influences, and Monáe’s soul/funk hits , the tour should be unconventional to say the least.

Ticket sales open to the public on Thursday, April 17th.
