Kendrick Lamar gets personal in this episode of J. Cole’s Born Sinner series. In this mini-documentary, the “Bitch Don’t Kill My Vibe” rapper reflects on the role music has played in his life since a younging.
He talks about his dad blasting Big Daddy Kane while Kendrick Lamar was coming home from the hospital after birth. From there he spoke on the influence of Tupac’s lyric and how vividly he portrayed a teenage boy being lost.
When it comes to his gift of rhyming, his friend Jason Estrada gave him some advice: “It’s a sin for me not to be doing what I’m doing if I chose to take the easy way out knowing that I had this gift. Everybody can rap but only few get in these positions where they can really speak to a generation of people and have them follow it.”
He then spoke about a questions Erykah Badu posed to him: “What is your fulfillment? What are you’re looking for?” and revealed that she still hasn’t found what she’s looking for in this industry.
