Kirk Herbstreit and Dez Bryant give their two cents on Johnny Manziel
Over the last week reports have been surfacing that the Heisman trophy winner Johnny Manziel aka Johnny Football has been allegedly signing autographs for money. Reports have been surfacing that Manziel has signed over 4,400 autographs for multiple memorabilia companies. If Manziel has in fact broken NCAA law he will most likely miss the entire year for Texas A&M.
Today College Gameday’s Kirk Herbstreit and Dallas Cowboys WR Dez Bryant have weighed in on these allegations against Manziel.
Herbstreit’s approach went along the lines of these allegations being fake or Manziel being very stupid to break an obvious rule.
[The memorabilia allegations are] the most far-fetched story I’ve ever heard of, or [Manziel]‘s the dumbest player to ever play college football…It’s mind-boggling that he would walk into a room with these memorabilia people that he doesn’t even know and be willing to sign things and allegedly be paid.
From Bryant’s point of view he doesn’t want to see Manziel suspended, but he wants to see the NCAA show some consistency in their rulings. Bryant had this to say to the Star-Telegram;
“Hell yeah, I’ll be mad. I will be mad. But I don’t want him to get suspended. I will be mad more at the NCAA on how they do things. I just feel like it’s not fair. This is something I have no problem talking about because I feel like somebody needs to say something to him and let it be known how they treat people is not right.”
Bryant also shared his thoughts on the NCAA rules about autographs;
“He should be able to sign as many autographs and make as much money as he wants, because it’s his name. I feel like he’s the one who created it. He should be able to do whatever he feels as long as it’s legal and I don’t think there’s anything illegal about signing a picture of yourself and making money off himself. Shoot, the NCAA is making money off of it when they’re selling those No. 2 shirts. Why can’t he make a little bit of money off of it”
Both men do have points on the issue, if Manziel has broken a rule and doesn’t get suspended it will only prove that the NCAA is a flawed system. In regards to Herbstreit’s argument, yes if Manziel did deliberately take money for autographs than he is indeed one of the stupidest players ever.
Hopefully someone can talk to Manziel and set him straight because he has been in the media for everything but football this offseason.
