In South Korea suicide is a big hobby. The video tells you that amongst Organization for Economic Co-Operation and Development (OECD) nations, Korea ranks first in the “citizens take their own life category. For eight years. That’s a lot of suicide.

If South Korea is the suicide leader, then Mapo Bridge is death central. More South Koreans commit suicide on that bridge than on any other.

Samsung Life and the City of Seoul came together to come up with a solution. They decided to make Mapo Bridge illuminate messages of hope with every step along it’s length.

Since then, not only has the suicide rate on Mapo Bridge fallen 77%, but the bridge has been nicknamed the “Bridge Of Life” and has become a tourist destination for thousands and thousands of people every year.

The cynic may find that for a company like Samsung Insurance their primary motivation for this is to keep people alive and paying those premiums so that they don’t have to pay out any money to the families of dead suicidal customers.

This may be true. But if humanity can do something to restore someone’s belief in the value of life then isn’t it worth it?
