A mentally ill homeless man by the name of Jerome Murdough, was a Marine veteran. Because of the cold weather, Murdough, who is 56, decided to stay inside a Harlem apartment building. New York City police found Murdough in the apartment and put him in jail for trespassing. He was found dead a week later after temperatures in Rikers Island cell rose to 100 degrees. An official said, “He basically baked to death.”
His bail was set at $2,500, which was impossible for him to pay. Murdough took anti-seizure and anti-psychotic medication as well, this could have caused him to suffer more. About 40% of New York City’s inmates are mentally ill. Such a sad and unfortunate story!
