Florida woman could face up to 60 years after retrial in July
Marissa Alexander, the Florida woman sentenced to 20 years in prison after being convicted of three counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon in 2012, could now possibly face a triple sentence after her retrial in July.
Despite Alexander’s conviction having been thrown out, the Office of State Attorney Angela Corey is on a mission to send Alexander back to prison for 60 years, 20 years for each count, according to the Florida Times-Union.
33-year-old Alexander was initially convicted of three counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon after firing a warning shot in the direction of her estranged husband in an act of self-defense during an altercation. Shortly after having the conviction thrown out after the 1st District Court of Appeal in Tallahassee ruled that Circuit Judge James Daniel had made an error in shifting the burden to Alexander to prove that she was acting in self-defense, Alexander was released on bond on Nov. 27, 2013.
Alexander is currently on home detention while awaiting the July 28 retrial.
