Joey Bada$$ is 18 years old, but evokes the spirit of hip hop legends gone before he was old enough to grasp their greatness, which is part of the allure surrounding the Brooklyn MC.
Bada$$ dropped his newest single “Word Is Born” from his forthcoming mixtape “Summer Knights.” Produced by Statik Selektha, the track opens with a somber piano rift that carries throughout, and then transitions into a well-balanced mix of turntable scratches and drums.
The subject matter? Kush, cute chicks and life in the hood, which isn’t a new concept in hip hop, but its something about Joey’s delivery. Maybe its his cadence, or his ability to so authentically capture the best of 90s hip hop and yet spit it in a way that’s all his own.
“Word Is Born” is typical Joey Bada$$, which is refreshing to expect in today’s hip hop. It’s good to know someone will hold us accountable and remind us of days old when it was all about the rhymes and music.
It’s just odd that gatekeeper is only 18.
