These days, fashion has fully embraced the accessory game. From the belts to the shoes to the sunglasses, we’ve all come to appreciate the details more and more. And one brand that has definitely caught on before many, especially in the headwear department, is MODU Designs. The UK brand has been seen on Nicki Minaj, A$AP Rocky, Danny Brown, Rita Ora, Ace Hood, and TV shows like X-Factor. They’re all about make a loud statement as soon as you walk into a room. The customized bright snapbacks and beanies, along with non traditional shapes and sizes will shake up what you thought were the limits of a hat. The two co-founders met in the graffiti scene in London and have since dominated their lane. Check out their online store HERE, reach out for a custom piece, and then read our interview with Matthew Bogle, one of the co-founders. You can view a slideshow as well at the end of it all for some of Mr. Bogle’s favorite and best selling pieces.

And for those unfamiliar, New Threads is a fresh column we’ll be executing to celebrate independent fashion companies and the minds behind them. A teenager in an American suburb with a dope idea and a few bucks should be given mad props, if they’re due, just like your favorite luxury brand. We’ll pick a creator that deserves your attention and ask him/her a few questions, including our Final Four questions we ask all of our creators for that month. What’s the requirements to be featured on New Threads? Originality and quality. And please, make something you’d wear proudly. You can check out this weekend’s features that we did on Sav Noir HERE, GIANI NYC HERE, and an unnamed brand by Peanut & Sir Michael Rocks HERE. And from now on, we’ll be back each Friday with a new brand. Hit us up on Twitter if you know someone who has or you yourself have a dope brand on the rise.

DSC05454Where did you get the initial idea to start MODU?

I came up with the idea when I was a young 16 year old graffiti renegade in East London. I also knew guys who would always graf up over local train lines and I wanted to put together a collective as I was bored of graffin alone. Teejay aka Munch is the co-founder, as I met him at a performing arts youth club and he inspired me to make it happen as he was studying fine art in college and had an interest in putting graffiti on to clothes. He also had the sickest selection of hats!

What is the significance of the name, MODU?

M.O.D.U stands for Members Of Da Undaground, which is a vital reminder that we want our customers not to feel like customers but actual members and of a global fashion movement.

Your company is all about merging streetwear and high end fashion. I’ve talked to a lot of brands that aim for that as well, which is admirable. How do you see MODU setting itself apart from these other brands?

Unlike other brands we try to give our customers that bespoke and exclusive experience. All our hats are hand engineered here in east London. We pride ourselves on taking classic hats of all eras and reinventing their perception to a new audience. That’s why we were easily the first brand to start using acrylics and mirrors on hats while everyone else was using embroidery. We took a gamble and wanted to give our hats a more futuristic appeal.

I read that you want to move from artists to also royalty wearing your hats! Is there anywhere else after that you want to take MODU?

Haha, yes it will be hard to top that if we got Royalty wearing MODU but we get a buzz from crazy creative challenges. So we want to go political and can’t think of anyone better than your very own president, so either President Barrack Obama or his wife First Lady Michelle would be a great statement. We may even try our London Mayor Boris Johnson. He’s got a reputation for being quirky so I think we might be in with a chance.

What was the inspiration to make such bold designs with your snapbacks?

So Teejay came up with the idea of doing Snapbacks back in 2010 when everyone was paying crazy money for rare vintage snapbacks. I had previously done some graffiti on trucker hats during my b-boy days and I think having come from a graffiti background we naturally want people to stand out and make a statement – that’s why the first hat we made said HYPE.

We then continued to think of cool words that would look good on hats, the most popular has been: BOSS, DOPE, SICK & HUSTLE HARD. As we’ve evolved we have kept these original ideas but been even more creative and technical. Curving letters, using different fonts, creating sentences and using people’s logos.
