Power Executive Gee Spin, With Joe De Angelis, lead the way as Power 105.1 partners with the Hip-Hop Summit Youth Council to improve public safety, as well as empower community residents with the resources to succeed.
For the first time in years NYC is experiencing a dark and uncertain period in public safety after being recognized as the “Safest Big City” in the country for many years. With Crime and Violence in the city and NYCHA Developments on the rise, along with tension between the NYPD and the Community sparked by the unfortunate death of 41-year-old Staten Island resident Eric Garner, there appears to be a bright light at the end of the tunnel in midst of all this chaos.
Power 105.1, a Clear Channel affiliate that brings you the best in Hip-Hop & R&B with the #1 morning show (The Breakfast Club 6-10AM) and the “Queen of Radio” Angie Martinez in the afternoon 2-6PM, has taken an “unprecedented socially responsible” approach to ending gun and gang violence by partnering with the Hip-Hop Summit Youth Council to support their Hip-Hop Against Gun & Gang Violence Project in a major way. This Private/Public Partnership is innovative, unique in its scope, and exactly what our communities need to end the violence. It can serve as a model for corporations that may also want to step up to the plate and take a leadership role when it comes to public safety and the empowerment of those living in poor and disadvantaged neighborhoods.
“It takes an entire village to raise a child,” but when our government lacks the management skills, funds, resources and long term commitment for change, it is up to the people and private sector to step up to the plate and make a difference and that is exactly what Power 105.1 and the Hip-Hop Summit Youth Council has done this year. Community groups and residents can no longer depend on anyone else to save and protect their children, women and seniors. Is the private sector really doing enough to empower our communities? We are working on a “4 part series” to be published next month to get you some well-deserved answers to that million-dollar question. There are many groups out there doing their best, but none are on the level of Power105.1. Their unwavering efforts, plans and commitment to end gun and gang violence is unparalleled in this day and time. Trust us, what that station is doing is rare in the world of “radio and big business” and after 36 years in the social service arena we know the difference.
As we embark upon the summer’s half way mark, it is important for “concerned community citizens” to know that thanks to the overwhelming support of Power 105.1 our 105 day campaign has been so effective that we will expand our collective efforts to improve graduation and address obesity, unemployment, substance abuse, gender and woman equality, while we continue our work to end gun and gang violence, through 2015.
Many thanks to the awesome work of Gee Spin, the seasoned Assistant Program Director and Music Director at Power 105.1; the Director of Promotions, Joe De Angelis, a rising, young talented executive with a vision for social justice and equality; “The Breakfast Club”; and the entire Power 105.1 crew that has been there for us this year.
The station’s support provides resources that are the equivalent of millions in advertisement dollars and goes a long way towards our collaborative efforts to empower local communities with the resources they need to succeed, which also includes improving relations between gangs, the police and local residents.
Stay tuned for major announcements regarding a host of “Back to School” initiatives, the “7 E’s 4 Power” Tour, the Earth-Shaking “Powerhouse” Concert, special Thanksgiving & Christmas events, Black History Month and the 2015 NBA All-star game at Barclay Center next year as the NBA finally comes to Brooklyn. You know All-Star weekend is going to be off the hook and Power 105.1 with the Hip-Hop Summit Youth Council will be in the mix serving the social, educational, political, economic, and entertainment needs of students, youth and young adults. By joining the “Raptivism Team” and signing our “Petition 4 Power” you can be a part of the “Solution and not the Problem” and share in the benefits that will soon be offered.
86 citizens die daily form firearms; there are 33,000 gangs representing 1.4 million members who commitment 48% of the nation’s violent crime. Poverty and illiteracy are the “Root Causes” of gun and gang violence so we know what the problem is and are counting on you to support our “Call To Action” so that we can make this a safer and better world for our children, youth and young adults.
