Coors Light is no longer searching for the coldest MC. Their hunt came to an end last night in NYC at Stage 48. Before Big Sean, the headliner of the evening, touched the stage, four contestants had to compete for that top spot where winner takes all, including a $20,000 check, editorials, a verse from Bun B plus a track produced by DJ Drama. Crazy, right?

Before the show got started, last year’s Coldest MC Felli Fame shared some words.

“[Search For The Coldest] shows your fan participation. To get in the competition, you need votes. That alone shows who is going to support you,” he says. “So I knew off the bat, last year when I saw I was number one, I said you know what? My fans got my back.”

And in hip-hop, that support is always plus. Especially when you’re in front of a tough crowd. Last night on that fine July evening, New York was definitely the coldest.

“What better way to end a hip-hop competition than in the birth place of hip-hop?” asked Bun B.

As each competitor touched the stage with a freestyle, a hot 16 and an original song, damn near all of them were booed. New Yorkers were not holding back. With a roar that would give any TV head a flashback to Apollo’s Sandman moments, the crowd had no problem showing their distaste for what they were hearing.

The one MC that showed and proved last night was Mr. Hyde. On several occasions, the crowd oh’d and ah’d at the lines he spit and even clapped after his segment.

At that point, there was no questioning that he was the best of the contestants and it definitely wasn’t a surprise when Bun B, DJ Drama and Ice Cube announced him as 2013’s Coldest MC.

After a celebratory win, Detroit’s own Big Sean came out and blessed fans with “Guap,” “Marvin Gaye and Chardonnay” and one of his latest singles, “Beware.” He also performed his verses from “Clique,” “Burn,” and “Mercy.”

Good Music.

Congrats to Mr. Hyde. Stay tuned for details on next year’s Coors Light Search For The Coldest!
