Senator Karen Peterson and longtime partner tie the knot this morning.
The LBGT community has been celebrating a major human rights victory all weekend, but the festivities have only just begun. In Delaware, as the state’s new gay marriage law took effect this morning, same-sex couples lined up to get their licenses.
The first couple to exchange vows was Senator Karen Peterson and her longtime partner Vikki Bandy. The two 63 year-old women were overcome with joy on the momentous occasion in which they were able to officially exchange the rings they’d given to each other over two decades ago. After the ceremony, Bandy commented:
“Today, we were married in your eyes, but in our eyes, we’ve been married for 24 years.”
After Democratic Governor Jack Markell signed a gay marriage bill into law in May, Delaware became the 11th state to allow same-sex marriages.
