New Orleans, Solange Knowles’ home when she’s not in Brooklyn, is also where she is raising her 9-year-old son, Julez. The latest on Julez is that he is now writing Hov-approved raps “like crazy,” taking the “Eminem approach” and loading up his bars with as many lyrics as possible. “Very fast, very smart, lots of syllables,” his mama says.
“I wanted to make a New Age woman’s Mary Jane album,” said Solange Knowles when she made a stop by Angie Martinez’s studio at Hot 97. Knowles was there to promote her latest compilation disc, Saint Heron, which features album artwork from New Orleans artist Rashad Newsom.
“It’s a double meaning. I named my record label Saint Records. I wanted the compilation to play off of that, so I started googling ‘black saints’, and Saint Heron was actually an Egyptian martyr who’s a saint. And then simultaneously I was reading Gil Scott-Heron’s autobiography and his father’s name was Saint Heron.”
