Danielle Brooks was the breakout star of Season 1 of the NetFlix Original Series “Orange is the New Black,” as Taystee and she is also guest starring on the first episode of Season 3 of HBO’s “Girls.” We caught up with her on the red carpet for the show’s premiere on Monday, Jan. 6. Check out what she had to say!

Tell us about your role on Season 3 of “Girls”?

Danielle Brooks: I’m really excited, I play a character named Laura, she’s very introverted and very shy. I think she’s really trying to figure out her innocence and she’s trying to figure out her sexuality. So it was a lot of fun. She is very different from Taystee on “Orange is the New Black,” whose very bold and courageous so it was cool to show range.

Tell us about collaborating with Lena Dunham?

Danielle Brooks: Oh she’s amazing she made me feel very very comfortable lena is a wonderful director and I am so honored that I got a chance to work with her.

“Orange is the New Black” has been a massive hit. Can you reflect on that?

Danielle Brooks: It’s been really cool to be on “Orange.” I am very thankful to be working with such a great show runner Jenji Kohan and such amazing women that are so generous with their talent and their spirit, so I had a great time on “Orange” Season 1 and Season 2, I’m really excited for everyone to see it.

What do you love about playing Taystee?

Danielle Brooks: I love that she is bold and that she has an open heart.

After viewing three episodes of the show, it was time to party! DJ Hesta Prynn was on the turntables and guests enjoyed a delicious dinner. We loved that the servers rocked flannel tops. They looked very hipster. Other highlights from the party included a life sized replica of the G Train stationed in the middle of the venue. The first hundred people to “ride the train,” received a projecteo. Guests were also served candy from the newsstand. There were also tea leaf readings on the other side of the room, manicures and a make up touch up station. Guests left with a “Girls” tote packed with life’s essentials like chocolate, nail polish and pantyhose (to name a few).
