On Sunday evening, The Source Magazine was on the red carpet for the 2013 Tony Awards, which broadcasted live from Radio City Music Hall in New York City, on CBS. Presented by The Broadway League and the American Theatre Wing the annual awards show brought out some bold-faced names.
We had the opportunity to speak with NBA star Tyson Chandler and his lovely wife Kimberly on the red carpet. They produced the play “The Trip to Bountiful,” which was nominated for Best Revival of a Play.
What inspired you to produce this play?
TC: I think just the talent. Cicely Tyson, Condola Rashad, Vanessa Williams, Cuba Gooding Jr., everyone.
Is this the first play that you have produced?
TC: Yes, this is our first play and we’re up for a Tony so it’s exciting.
What was the most interesting about being apart of broadway?
KC: I think behind the scenes and seeing how the production is put together.
Can you speak about working with the iconic Cicely Tyson?
I think every moment and every opportunity that we get to watch her we should cherish it…Watching her up there and still demanding the stage I think every single time you get different emotions but to me they’re always proud emotions just to watch her and it see how she still has it.
Q: Was it important to you guys that this was the first time an all black cast starred in this play?
TC: Yes, Absolutely when we sat down with the other producers, that was one of the things that drew us to the play and also to myself being the first athlete to be nominated for a Tony to have the opportunity to do so was also obviously something special.
Any final thoughts?
KC: It’s been a once in a life time experience and something that we never would have dreamed that we would be apart of so it’s amazing.
