The Source Magazine was on the red carpet for the New York premiere of Warner Bros. space thriller “Gravity,” directed by Alfonso Cuarón and starring George Clooney and Sandra Bullock.
Film Synopsis: Dr. Ryan Stone (Bullock) is a brilliant medical engineer on her first shuttle mission, with veteran astronaut Matt Kowalski (Clooney) in command. But on a seemingly routine mission, disaster strikes. The shuttle is destroyed, leaving Stone and Kowalski completely alone—tethered to nothing but each other and spiraling out into the blackness. The deafening silence tells them they have lost any link to Earth…and any chance for rescue. As fear turns to panic, every gulp of air eats away at what little oxygen is left. But the only way home may be to go further out into the terrifying expanse of space.
George Clooney was incredibly gracious taking time to answer everyone’s questions on the red carpet.
Q: Tell us about working on this film.
Clooney: Well, it was fun working with Sandy obviously and I wanted to work with Alfonso because I think he’s one of the best directors in the game and I think he’s been that way for about ten years. And so from the very beginning it was just fun…I loved the day I got there and then I loved the day I left, it was really fun.
Q: What did you love about the script?
Clooney: Well I liked the idea of it. I liked all the metaphors that weren’t really being talked about. I loved the idea of birth and hope and I loved all of those things. I didn’t know if they’d play out or not I didn’t know if you’d get it or not, but he’s a good director, so you did. But I also thought it was a fun part for me to play you know, I didn’t have much of the burden. Sandy’s got to hang from a rope for about six months. I didn’t have nearly that much trouble.
Q: “Gravity” is being praised for having such great visuals and you’re just working with Sandy.
Clooney: Yeah well that’s the fun part. She’s exactly what you think she is when you talk to her and see her. She’s funny and fun and easy going and I’ve known her for well over 20 years and we’ve been good friends, so it’s just fun to work with her.
Q: Can you speak about immersing yourself in the world of space and what surprised you about that?
Clooney: Well, look I grew up, I was born in ’61 so that’s when the space race started so I grew up with space food sticks and tang and all these products about space so I was very fascinated with the idea of space. But then when you get up there and do this stuff you just go, ‘Okay I couldn’t do it.’ How claustrophobic it would be, not just inside the suit but inside the tiny sets. I couldn’t do it.
Q: Do you have plans to visit space?
Clooney: I don’t know you know Richard Branson is doing it now I think next year he’s sending people off to space, I’m not going to be the first one on, I’ll tell you that.
“Gravity” hits theaters October 4.
