Whoopi GoldbergLast Thursday, The Source Magazine was on the scene at a special screening of HBO’s latest documentary “Whoopi Goldberg Presents Moms Mabley”  at The Apollo theatre in Harlem. The film will air on Monday, November 18 at 9PM.

This film, which is directed and produced by Whoopi, brought out some of the culture’s biggest and brightest superstars and comedian icons. Kathy Griffin, Phylicia Rashad, Debra Martin Chase, Jon Michael Hill who is a Showtime at the Apollo host all walked the red carpet. We learned that Jon was recommended to be the host more than 7 years prior by Goldberg herself. Those who are meeting Moms for the first time, will quickly learn what a trailblazer she was in comedy. She has often been referred to as “the funniest woman in the world.” The iconic African-American standup comedienne Jackie “Moms” Mabley broke racial and sexual boundaries and continues to inspire comedians to this day. In her directorial film debut, Whoopi Goldberg, a modern-day comedy favorite pays homage to this pioneering talent. The film was hilarious and extremely informative. After being educated on such a great talent, guests were invited to Harlem’s legendary Sylvia’s Restaurant to keep the celebration going, and that’s exactly what we did complete with soul food, signature drinks and an opportunity to chat with Goldberg in a very organic and special way. It felt reminiscent of the stories we’ve all heard about Harlem’s magic, because the night was just that.
Our very own Chasity Saunders interviewed Goldberg, the woman of the evening, and asked  her why this film is relevant to the hip hop culture.
