It has been argued that the Houston rap scene in various ways birthed the indie hip hop game. As the proud hometown of notable talents such as Rap-A-Lot, the legendary Geto Boys (which of course included Scarface), DJ Screw and the Screwed Up Click, Swishahouse Records (that brought acts like Slim Thug, Mike Jones, and Paul Wall to the masses), not to forget the young talents such as Kirko Bangz, Propain, Killa Kyleon and Cory Mo.

However, while many of the aforementioned has reached mainstream notoriety, each artist undoubtedly continues to make their mark on the independent rap movement from the place many simply know as Beyonce‘s hometown.  Yet, next up from the Houston family is Lil Keke, an original member of the Screwed Up Click who has proudly established himself as an indie artist with a loyal and dedicated following.  Even without major radio support he’s usually booked months in advance.

So who is this guy?

Recently, Lil Keke announced his #MoneyDontSleep Challenge this week.

For the campaign, in honor of his forthcoming album “Money Don’t Sleep, the emcee will release a new visual performance of a new freestyle for his fans each week. For the first installment of the #MoneyDontSleep Challenge, Lil Keke links with Killa Kyleon to bring the single “Freestyle” to life.  This hometown collaboration is from Lil Keke’s recently released EP sampler “The Album Before the Album” (A.B.A.) 3 hosted by DJ Michael 5000 Watts.

His forthcoming album, Money Don’t Sleep, releases May 2014.
