16-year-old Virginia teen tweets nude photos of self, faces child pornography charges

A James City County teen is facing child pornography charges after uploading nude photographs of herself on the popular social networking site Twitter.

Upon the photos surfacing the internet, a school resource officer was informed and subsequently had a talk with the unidentified 16-year-old and her mother. In addition, officers with the James City County Police Department received an anonymous tip regarding the lewd photos, according to Stephanie Williams-Ortery of the JCCPD. Outside of the photos being uploaded to Twitter, Williams-Ortery stated that the photos were also sent to a couple of boys.

“It’s not just friends that see what they post, but also strangers and everyone else out there. You have no idea who’s out there watching. You never know who’s going to see what you post,” said Williams-Ortery.

After having her cell phone seized for evidence, the teen was charged with one count of distribution of child pornography. Due to the lewdness of the obscenity of the photos, police officials say the teen crossed the line of sexting to child pornography.

The nude photos have since been removed from Twitter and the teen will not have to register as a sex offender.
