Last night VH1 aired the second installment of Steve Stoutes documentary The Tanning of America during which rap innovators such as Nas, Jay Z, and Rev Run spoke on the influence of rap culture on the United States.

The documentary tells the history of Hip Hop  depicting how the fashion, culture and message of this once underground genre has infused and revitalized mainstream music even providing a bridge across cultural divides. ”I can draw a direct line between 1520 Sedgewick in the Bronx, the apartment complex where Hip Hop was born to 1600 Hundred Pennsylvania avenue” said Stoute of the effect of Hip Hop culture on America’s political landscape.

The film ties together three decades of  music and media surrounding Hip-hop, creating a link to the cultural immersion and social progress that we have accomplished today.
