100vigil

Around the country, one hundred cities will hold vigils at their federal court building to challenge the George Zimmerman verdict

At noon, over 100 cities have planned organized protests to rally in opposition to the not guilty verdict passed down by a Florida jury a week ago today for the shooting death of Trayvon Martin.

Martin’s parents will lead the protests, which was organized by Reverend Al Sharpton, which is a strategy that will be used in an attempt to push the DOJ to bring a civil rights case against acquitted Neighborhood Watch volunteer George Zimmerman. Trayvon’s dad will lead the demonstration in their hometown of Miami, while Sybrina Fulton ,Trayvon’s mother, will lead the demonstration in NYC outside of NYPD headquarters along with Rev. Sharpton.

The protests will be taking place the day after President Obama unexpectedly addressed the case, in which he said, “Trayvon Martin could have been me 35 years ago.”

Zimmerman was acquitted on all charges on July 13 for the shooting death of an unarmed Martin in Sanford, Florida. This case has sparked a national fervor, resurrecting issues of disparities regarding racial profiling and the criminal justice system.
