When 19-year-old Asher Vongtau found himself trapped between two buildings for 36 hours, he thought about what any person trapped in a narrow space by himself would think of — “What would James Franco do?!”

During his treacherous 36-hour experience, Vongtau’s mother says her son contemplated cutting off his own arm, similar to what [SPOILER ALERT] James Franco was forced to do in the film “127 Hours.”

“He began to think about the movie where the guy chops off his arm,” the 19-year-old’s mother Habiba Vongtau told reporters. “He thought, ‘Am I gonna have to do that?’ He thought about his family. He thought, ‘I’m not gonna give up.’ He just yelled for help as much he could.” she said.

The Political Science major found himself stuck between a dorm building and an adjacent building over the weekend when he slipped while attempting to climb into his friend’s room using a fire escape. Yes, alcohol was involved.

After a day and a half of searching by his friends and school security, Vongtau was found Sunday night when a guard discovered his cell phone on the fire escape and heard his cries.

Luck does not even begin to describe this situation. Kudos to the New York Fire Department who were the real heroes in this story. We’re glad this kid got out okay and didn’t resort to cutting off his arm — not like he could have, but, you know what I mean.
