This week in SMH news: MLK continues to promote parties
The invention of Photoshop has impacted the world in both good and bad ways. In the case of one of the most respected civil rights activists in US history, the popular design program has been responsible for slight degradation of Dr. Martin Luther King‘s image, especially on his birthday. It’s been an on-going trend for several years, but now club promoters have basically set an expectation to tarnish King’s image by using his likeness in MLK weekend club flyers.
There are events that occur during MLK Weekend that celebrate his life and embrace his work. However, though it’s technically not illegal, Dr. King’s face has been included some of the wildest events possible from club parties to strip club events. As much as King has done for civil rights, it’s extraordinary to see what people are willing to do to promote their events, even if it means exploiting a deceased political figure.
