USA reaches 7th straight World Cup
It wasn’t necessarily pretty, but a win is a win.
The USA and Mexico squared off tonight at Columbus Crew Stadium in Columbus, Ohio in front of a raucous crowd of 25,000 people. For the USA a win tonight meant a 7th straight World Cup berth, but they also needed Honduras to defeat Panama. Mexico on the other hand needed a win to stay in the hunt for a World Cup berth.
With Michael Bradley injured and three players not playing due to Yellow Cards the USA struggled at times against El Tri. Ultimately the USA would prevail 2-0 thanks to a header by Eddie Johnson and an insurance goal from Landon Donovan. (Honduras would tie Panama 2-2)
For Mexico this spells trouble as the will likely have to play New Zealand in a playoff to get in to the World Cup. In regards to the USA this is just the tip of the iceberg of how well this team can do. Jurgen Klinsmann has had this USA team playing on fire as of late and a berth with two qualifiers left is massive for his squad.
As we saw last World Cup you can never really count the USA out of a game, but they are prone to revert back to inconsistency. USA will be amongst the dark horses when the field is set for Brazil.
