Coachella 2014 will be jumping off the second and third weekend in April (11-13 and 18-20). It’s looking like a big year for hip-hop and R&B, with a healthy list of icons and up and comers looking to take the stage by storm. From classic NY style hip hop to neo-soul and beyond, here are the hip-hop/R&B acts to look for at Coachella this year.

Outkast

The legendary André 3000 and Big Boi (pictured above) are reuniting to headline the first day of both weekends at the show. From their 1991 debut “Southernplayalisticadillacmuzik” to the multi-million selling game changer “Speakerboxx/The Love Below,” the Atlanta-based group’s reunion couldn’t have come sooner for fans the world over.

Nas 

One of the original greats of the genre since his “Illmatic” days, the Queens, NY-based MC has become a hip-hop institution in the last 20+ years. This isn’t his first year at the festival, but it will be his first without supporting act Damian “Junior Gong” Marley, whom he played the festival with back in 2011.

Pharrell Williams

Williams’ production credits are extensive, ranging from his eclectic work with The Neptunes, R&B rock fusion with group N.E.R.D., and soundtrack work for the Despicable Me film franchise. Last year, he was featured in the teaser trailer for French Electronic duo Daft Punk‘s a bum “Random Access Memories,” so who knows what he’ll have cooked up this year?

Kid Cudi

The “Man On The Moon” MC is making his Coachella debut this year, bringing his spacey production and lyrical sensibilities with him for the ride.

Solange

The often unappreciated sister of Beyoncé will be getting her chance in the Coachella spotlight this year.

Flatbush Zombies

The Beast Coast crew from Flatbush, Brooklyn are also making their Coachella debut this year, after the success of their second mix tape “BetterOffDEAD.” Their hazy beats, courtesy of producer Erick “Arc” Elliot, and out-there aesthetic choices continue to carry them far.

Jhené Aiko

After the release of her debut EP “Sail Out,” lady crooner Aiko is riding on a wave of introspective love-lorn sing-song that’s kept her in the public eye since she dropped “Bed Peace” with Childish Gambino back in October. She hopes to drop her debut album “Souled Out” this coming May.

A$AP Ferg

The Trap Lord of the A$AP Mob is taking his solo act to the Coachella stage this year. Who’s to say that he won’t bring his Harlem-based mob out on a moment’s notice?

Chance The Rapper

The Chicago-born MC who took 2013 by storm with “Acid Rap” will be bringing his new age jazz/rap fusion act to Coachella for the first time this year.

Ratking

 

A hip-hop/punk group from NYC, Ratking’s unique sound and presence are ready to take the stage.

The Internet  

The neo-soul portion of Los Angeles-based collective Odd Future, singer/producer duo Syd Tha Kidd and Matt Martians’ just celebrated the release of their second album “FeelGood” in October of last year.
