It’s often said that when you love what you do, you’ll never work a day in your life. In the current economic climate, the millennial generation has taken the anecdote and applied it to brand building in the digital world. Just ask Newark, New Jersey’s South Ward native, Barry Mcrimmon, Jr. who has always embraced the world of music, business and fashion and has turned it into a career.

At a young age, Mcrimmon, Jr. who goes by the stage name of Barry Bondz, has always had a mic in his hand. Admittedly, he didn’t start taking his lyrical skills seriously until about six years ago.  He marvels at the business acumen of rap moguls Jay-Z and 50 Cent. Since he’s taken the rapping seriously, he’s three albums in and has quietly began to build his empire. “I’m a self-made man,” Barry Bondz told The Source.

The power to make music and brand myself at the same time,” he said.

Check out one of his freestyles:

The artist and co-producer has appeared on BET’s hip-hop cyphers in 2011 and 2012 and recorded music in the the Legendary D&D studios, and I his song “South Ward” was featured in the Forest Whitaker documentary Brick City, a film about Newark, New Jersey.

According to Barry Bondz, he lives by an adage his grandfather taught him years ago: “Every man has one destiny & I’ve figured out that this is my destiny,” he said. Bondz listened and took that advice and ran with it. With his buzz and exposure, he founded Genco Media, LLC. Under the Genco umbrella, he’s crafted Genco Apparel, Bullseye Films, Genco Studios, Genco Consulting. He also got a joint ventured with Killa Konceptz and Dop3 Kru.

Check out a new track he posted today:

Bonds speaks reverently about Jay-Z and 50 Cent as great case studies to model a career after and he’s got good company with both having been successful in music, clothing in lifestyle.

Barry Bondz dropped his newest title Glory on March 11 on SoundCloud.

You can check it out here.

Barry Bondz caught up with The Source and gave us a glimpse into his world.

The Source: What draws you to hip-hop?

Barry Bondz: It’s a way of expressing my feelings in the purist form. Its damn near spiritual for me. A place that when I’m there, I feel untouchable.

The Source: Tell us about Glory.

Barry Bondz: This title of the project clearly states the mind state of a made man. Nothing to prove and everything to gain. As the President/A&R of Genco “The Legend” would say: Started out with nothing, ended up with everything! Glory!

The Source. Who keeps you grounded?

Barry Bondz: My team does. My team is my family. We are so tight that they label us the Genco Mafia. Need I say more?

The Source: Who inspires you in the rap game?

Barry Bondz: I’m inspired by the moguls. I can honestly say I’m more than a hip hop artist. I’m in the studio, then straight to the marketing room. The Jay Z’s, Drakes, Jeezy’s, Nas, 50 Cent and Em. I’m fascinated with the idea of creation and reinvention. Being able to stand the test of time. It’s not where you start, it’s where u finish.

Glory is a free download with a Deluxe version hitting iTunes soon. Look out for the official launch of Genco Apparel clothing and Make sure to check out his site www.barrybondz.com. While you’re at it, give Barry a follow on Twitter @Bondzworld
