For a long time, there has been a strained relationship between Temple University and the North Philadelphia neighborhood that houses it. There are always stories about Temple students getting robbed for their phones, devices or cash as they are seen as easy prey to the wolves. There is a game being played among the kids in the neighborhood called “Knock A Bitch Down,” which is similar to “The Knockout Game.” In this game, the kids attack an unsuspecting person. Abbey Luffey, a Temple student, found herself on the wrong end of that game one night as she walked home on the edge of campus with her boyfriend. She was attacked by a group of teens, including 16-year-old Zaria Estes, who hit her with a devastating blow with a brick. The brick broke Luffey’s jaw, palate and teeth. She has had to endure many surgeries with more to come. She is also extremely paranoid to be anywhere other than her home. Philadelphia Common Pleas Court Judge Michael Erdos sentenced Estes to two and a half years in state prison as punishment for the attack after a three hour trial. The charges included aggravated assault, conspiracy and possession of an instrument of crime. In addition to the sentence, Estes will be on probation for four years after her release. Te sentence was seen as a happy medium between the defense’s goal of house arrest and the prosecution’s request of five to ten years.
